Cooking Butternut Squash

Cooking Butternut Squash in Everything

Butternut squash is a delicious winter squash that tastes like a
cross between pumpkin and sweet potato. Cooking butternut
squash is very popular in Australia and South Africa and is often
substituted for pumpkin in Australia. Butternut squash is a very
healthy fruit that is a good source of fiber, vitamin C and A,
potassium, magnesium and manganese. The vibrant color is also
an indication of its rich antioxidant content. Cooking butternut
squash is easy because it can be incorporated into all meals and
is versatile enough that you won't get sick of it.

Choosing and Storing

A butternut squash can come in a few colors, from light yellow to
tan with a vibrant orange flesh. The longer it spends on the vine
the deeper its color. When you choose a butternut squash find
one that is heavy, it will have more flesh. Also make sure that is
free from any blemishes and there are no mold spots on it. You
can store a butternut squash longer than a summer squash, for
about a month at least in cool dry place if it hasn't been cut. If it
has been cut or you don't have a lot of place, simply wrap it in
plastic wrap and keep in the fridge for as long as five days.

Preparing and Cooking

To prepare the squash just cut it lengthwise after rinsing and
remove the seeds. Depending on how you are going to cook it
you can leave the skin on or peel it. Don't throw away the
seeds because you can roast them just like you might with
pumpkin seeds. Cooking butternut squash is easy because of its
texture. It can be easily made into hearty soups during fall and
winter, try and mix it with Asian flavors and ingredients like
coconut milk and a little bit of chili for an interesting contrast
of flavor.

Cooking butternut squash as a roast is also a good way to cook
it, whether on its own or with other vegetables such as potatoes,
carrots and turnips with a little olive oil. Butternut squash can
also be made into desserts, its sweet flavor and creamy texture
is great in cakes and muffins. Adding steamed squash to a plain
cake will really jazz it up. Little ones who are just starting on
solid foods will adore it when you try cooking butternut squash
purees for them. It is a healthy food to introduce into baby's diet
as well as very easy to prepare.

Diabetes and Exercise

Diabetes And Exercise: Perfect Together

Having diabetes doesn't mean you are bedridden for the rest of
your life. On the contrary, regular exercise is a great way to
manage your diabetes. And exercise has other health benefits
such as help keep your circulation going, your heart strong and
your energy levels up. You don’t have to become a triathlete in
order to get benefits from regular exercise if you are diabetic.
But you do need to have both your diabetes and exercise plans
approved by your doctor.

Weight Loss

The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 diabetes, which is
usually triggered by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. That means
put down the Twinkie and get off of the couch and go outside.
Don’t look at your diabetes as a curse – see it as a warning sign
to strongly motivate you to a healthier and less painful way of
living. Managing your weight and your diet can greatly help you
manage your diabetes. And exercise is inexpensive, varied and
good medicine.

Attitude Of Gratitude

Best-selling author Dr. Anthony Weil has suggested that diabetes
– especially Type 2 diabetes – may be an evolutionary advantage
to keep us from eating ourselves to death. So, maybe with
diabetes you are more advanced than other human beings. The
fact you have diabetes can't be changed, but your attitude
towards your diabetes can be changed. That might be all the
difference you need.

Diabetes and exercise work together to help try and keep you
healthy, alert and active. Along with walking, riding a bike,
gardening, swimming or doing household chores, you can find
many ways of adding exercise to your daily life. Follow your
doctor's advice and do not exercise to the point where it's painful.
Take it easy at first and gradually work up to longer and longer
periods of activity.

In order to help your diabetes and exercise plans, you need to eat
a sensible diet, quit smoking and quit drinking. This will give you
the energy you need to exercise, manage diabetes and get
through the day. Eating more healthy foods takes a couple of
weeks to get used to, but you can retrain your taste buds to
like almost food. Quitting smoking will also help you taste your
food a lot better.

Neither diabetes nor exercise is welcomed by the average person,
but they needn't be so dreaded. One is an alarm call, and the
other is your road to recovery. Use them wisely.

Diabetes

Complications That Arise From Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious disease that gives rise to many other
conditions that threaten people from all walks of life. It is a
condition that results from abnormal production of insulin on our
bodies or the misuse of glucose in our bodies. There are many
different health problems that arise from having diabetes. The
condition itself needs constant monitoring regarding the levels
of insulin or glucose we have in our bodies.

Heart Disease And Stroke

Diabetes contributes to heart disease and stroke due to the
deposits that accumulate in the arteries. Having elevated levels
of glucose can lead to fatty deposits in the interior of our blood
vessels. These deposits will restrict the flow of blood and
increase the chances of a clogged artery and hardening of the
blood vessels. These are warning signs and symptoms of a
possible heart attack or stroke.

Nerve Damage Or Diabetic Neuropathies

Nerve damage caused by diabetes result to numbness, pain or
weakness in the limbs or extremities. The causes of this
condition are the malfunction of the veins and nerves to bring
blood to the end destination due to deposits in the arterials
walls and some autoimmune factors that contribute to
enlargement or inflammation of the veins and nerves.

Eye Disease

Having high blood sugar and high blood pressure can damage our
eyes and result to blindness or partial loss of vision. Diabetes can
cause the nerves in your eyes to swell and eventually weaken.
This will result to restricted blood flow to the eyes prompting the
eyes to produce new blood vessels which are weak and break off
easily leading to blood leaks in the eyeball causing blockage in
vision.

Kidney Disease Due To Diabetes

Kidney failure is a condition where our kidneys can not properly
get rid of our bodily wastes. This condition can be caused by
diabetes. Our kidneys filter out the wastes of our body and
when this function stops or is disrupted our bodies will
deteriorate. A combination of hypertension and diabetes can
cause kidney failure.

Gum and Tooth Problems

Diabetes can contribute to teeth and gum problems by
promoting the growth of bacteria through plaque deposits in our
teeth. Elevated glucose can encourage germ growth resulting in
more plaque.

Diabetes can cause many complications that can threaten our
life. Managing our blood glucose levels and controlling our
diabetes can help to prevent or alleviate complications due to
the condition. Having a family history of the disease as well as
being overweight are signs that you might have it.

Cooking

Cooking with Kids Teaches Important Lessons

Cooking can be a chore for those of us who do it every day and
bringing kids in to the equation is only a recipe for confusion and
messes. However, this need not be true. Cooking can teach your
children invaluable lessons and you never know they might grow
up sooner than you think and take over. Just that thought may
motivate you to read on.

Confidence and Creativity

As it is often said, confidence is the greatest gift you can give
your child. When they help you make something and you give
them the credit, you can see them feeling proud of their
accomplishment and beaming from side to side. This is a big step
in confidence because they feel they were able to create
something which everyone is enjoying. Even if they mixed the
dry ingredients when you were cooking or baking, the sense of
accomplishment that 'I did it' is the most important lesson they
learn.

Math Skills

While measuring ingredients, you can give them a practical math
lesson while cooking with you. Asking them to double the
ingredients if you are cooking two batches of soup or halving
them if you are just making an appetizer size will help them
practice their math skills without having to sit and work on a
desk with paper and pens. They will also realize the practical
aspect of math and may begin to put two and two together
(literally) and like the subject even more when they can see how
it is useful in everyday life.

Nutrition Skills

With childhood obesity levels at scary rates in the United States,
cooking together is a great way to teach children some facts and
figures about healthy eating and nutrition. Explaining how they
just need a little olive or canola oil to make their French toast
instead of deep frying the bread like there is no tomorrow is just
one simple lesson you can impart. Trying out new fresh salads
instead of desserts all the time is also setting a good example of
healthy eating.

Equality

Equality in the kitchen is another great lesson you can teach by
cooking with your kids. By telling your sons from a young age
that they can pitch in too and that the kitchen is not only the
woman's domain, you are doing a big favor to is future wife and
your next generation. Men who are involved in cooking and
cleaning often have more respect for their spouses as they do
not underestimate the time and effort it takes to whip up a
meal and maintain a home.

Canidae Dog Food

Hard To Spell, Easy To Feed Canidae Dog Food

Canidae dog food and Feliadae cat food are gourmet lines of pet
food that features human grade food ingredients. Canidae dog
food is not to be confused with Canine Caviar dog food, affected
by the massive pet food recall of early 2007. Since food allergies
are on the rice in pet dogs, Canidae dog food is not made with
corn, wheat, soy or artificial preservatives that make up the bulk
of ingredients in most other brands of dog food. Instead, they
feature meat – what a concept in dog food!

The Difference

The most obvious difference between Canidae dog food and a
brand like Alpo is the price. This is premium food, and
consequentially carries a much higher price tag. Your dog will
probably gobble Alpo just as willingly as Canidae. So, what's
the big difference? Alpo is junk food, made of sugar, salt and
anything swept off a slaughterhouse's floor. It is also loaded
with "fillers" that make a bulk of the food that include hard to
digest but yummy items like corn, soy and wheat.

Your dog will not be able to digest Alpo or other cheap brands
of dog food as well as a premium brand like Canidae dog food,
because there's just not a lot the dig's body can use.
Believe it or not, your dog will poop a lot less when eating a
premium brand of highly digestible dog food rather than junk
food like Alpo.

Different Dogs Need Different Food

Man shall not live by bread alone and neither can dogs. Dogs
have differing nutritional needs throughout their lives. Growing
puppies and highly active dogs like police dogs need high
protein, high calorie foods. Senior dogs, who are slowing down,
don't need the diet they had when they were younger. If you
continue to give them this diet, they will get very fat and
develop health complications from their excess fat.

Canidae dog food realizes this and helps you select the best
nutrition for your dog, no matter what stage of life he or she
is in. They have lines for puppies, adults, workers and seniors
(PAWS). They even have a line for overweight dogs
(don’t say "diet" around your dog – they seem to know what
it means).

Canidae dog food comes in canned food and dry kibble. The
flavors are chicken, lamb, turkey and fish. Beef and pork are
considered too high fat and too contaminated by growth
hormones to be of much benefit to dogs. Some dogs
don’t seem to mind beef or pork, but if your dog develops a
food or skin allergy, then high fat food will greatly aggravate
their condition.

Colonial Cooking

Colonial Cooking Concoctions

Colonial recipes were known for being very innovative and
delicious. The cooking traditions of the colonial times did not
end there—they live on through historical sites and
reenactments. Additionally, recipes that have been passed down
for hundreds of years also allow colonial cooking to live on. Some
might have changed over the years, but many recipes have
remained essentially the same since they were first prepared
hundreds of years ago. It is in this way that colonial cooking
is not just a thing of the past. Elements of colonial cooking can
be seen in modern day cooking, and they will most definitely be
present in future kitchens as well.

The Same Old Shepherd's Pie

One of the traditional colonial dishes that has remained a
well-liked meal to this very day is shepherd's pie. Shepherd's
pie is delicious, simple, and it is obviously popular enough to
have transcended centuries. To prepare shepherd's pie, you will
fist need to gather the ingredients. The ingredients, which have
remained very much the same since the time of colonial cooking,
include: 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, 2 pounds peeled and
diced carrots, ½ pound peeled and diced turnips, 1 medium
peeled and diced onion, 3 celery stalks, 13 cups of tomato
paste, salt, pepper, one teaspoon of fresh thyme, ½ cup of
flour, 2 cups of water or beef stock, 2 pounds of white or red
potatoes, ¼ pound unsalted butter, 1 egg, 1 egg yolk, and 2
pounds of lean boneless leg of lamb.

To begin preparing shepherd's pie, melt the butter in a Dutch
oven (you can use a small saucepan if you wish) over medium
high heat. Add the lamb, cook until finished, remove, and set
aside. Next, add the vegetables and sauté for about 3 minutes.
Add in the lamb, along with the thyme, and sprinkle the four
over the mixture. Cook on low heat, and then add in the cold
stock or water. Raise the heat so that it is medium high,
bringing the mixture to a boil, and stir in the tomato paste. Add
the salt and pepper, and continue to cook for 55 minutes.

While the lamb mixture is cooking, boil the potatoes over high
heat for about fifteen minutes. Drain and mash them with the
butter, egg, and yolk. Place this mixture in a pastry bag. When
you are ready to serve, preheat your broiler. Place the lamb in
small individual dishes, pipe the potatoes on top, and brown the
potatoes over the broiler. Serve the shepherd's pie immediately.

Don't Mess With Tradition

Meals like shepherd's pie have remained a classic favorite over
the years. Since the time of colonial cooking, there are some
things that have never changed.

Cure for Diabetes

Finding A Cure For Diabetes

There are many people out there such as doctors, researchers,
and patients who are longing for the day when the news press
makes the announcement that a cure for diabetes has been
found. That day will surely be a day that will hold a lot of
celebration as there are millions of adults and children who are
praying that day comes sooner rather then later as their
individual happiness is at stake. With the different medical
researchers working on finding a cure for diabetes, you would
think that it will not take much longer and the cure will be found.

But while the medical professionals and researchers have made
great strives in the fight for a cure for diabetes, they are far
away from the end. They have already spent years and billions
of dollars on this and they are not done yet. It is a lot more
complicated then any one person could dare to imagine and that
is why every effort that could possible be put in is worth its
weight in gold. The cure for diabetes should not be something
that we are still trying to figure out within ten years from now.
So the more help, be it volunteering or financial donations, that
the different researchers and associations receive, the better
our chances are of finding a cure soon.

How To Help

One excellent way in helping in finding a cure for diabetes is to
spread the word. Word of mouth advertisement does so much
more then anyone could possibly understand. While the diabetes
association could still use your donations and personal time, if
you help spread the word, you are helping them gain the help
of many more people. The key is to get as many people
involved as possible. A cure for diabetes does not have to be
something that the medical professionals work at alone as we
can all chip in and lend a hand.

While most of us are not scientists in any way shape or form,
we can help by giving our support, love, and money to those
who do have the knowledge to find a cure for diabetes. As
many more children are being diagnosed with this each year,
this is a disease that is affecting the future of your country,
and of our world. By helping to fund the research needed in
finding the cure for diabetes, you are helping in securing the
future of our children and of our world.

Certified Diabetes Educator

What The Heck Is A Certified Diabetes Educator?

This writer has written nearly fifty articles about diabetes. Does this
mean that I can call myself a Certified Diabetes Educator? Although
I do my best to help spread accurate information about diabetes,
I legally cannot call myself a Certified Diabetes Educator.
The "certified" part is for a reason – you have to earn a certificate
(that acts a bit like a diploma) from the National Certification Board
for Diabetics Educators (NCBDE).

How Do You Get One?

If I wanted to become a Certified Diabetes Educator, first I'd have
to switch professions from freelance writer to medicine. The exams
to get the certificate are only available to medical professionals.
The exams are voluntary. Although the NCBDE hopes that a
certificate would not be a requirement for a health care job, it
hopes that a certificate might help with promotions.

And even if you are a medical professional, you still have to check
with the NCBDE to see if you require to even take the examination.
They require a 1000 or more hours of
"diabetes self-management
education experience". No, I don't know what that means, either.
But then again, I'm not a Certified Diabetes Educator.

The privilege of taking the examination isn't for free, either. You
have to fork out a hefty application fee. Good thing you are already
a licensed medical professional so you can afford this. Your
certificate is good for five years. It's currently $250 (US) plus a
whole lot of paperwork in order to get a renewal. If you're late,
it's a $350 (US) fee. You also need to prove that you are taking
continuing diabetes education or take another exam. These renewal
procedures are scheduled to change in 2010.

Are They Making A Mountain Out Of A Molehill?

Granted, there aren't any Certified Constipation Educators or
Certified Sinusitis Educators, but diabetes is very complicated.
Did you know there are now THREE recognized types? Did you also
know that you don't to completely cut out sugar if you are diabetic?
Did you answer no to both? Then you probably can see the need
for Certified Diabetes Educators.

Diabetes is a very specialized field of medicine, which requires a lot
of study and research. Most doctors and nurses have to know about
every kind of illness and injury known to mankind, so some knowledge
of diabetes treatment might get fuzzy. But, diabetes is also a
common ailment, so the need for Certified Diabetes Educators is
tremendous.

Chinese Cooking

Chinese Cooking Sauces

The Chinese culture has contributed many wonderful things to the
rest of the world. Without a doubt, the most noticeable would be
their food. Many people in the western world have come to love
Chinese cooking, and a big reason for this is their unique use of
various sauces in the preparation of many of their dishes. Let's take
a brief look at a few of the delicious sauces that are used in Chinese
cooking.

Sweet and Sour Sauce

When it comes to Chinese cooking sauces, probably the most
recognizable is sweet and sour sauce. This sauce is used to add flavor
to a number of different meat dishes, such as chicken, pork and beef.
It's great for various stir fry dishes that are so popular in America.
Lately, it's become quite popular as a dipping sauce as well. This sauce
gets it's name because it's basically made from sugar and vinegar.

Hoi Sin Sauce

This brownish-red sauce is sort of the Chinese version of barbecue
sauce. It's made from a combination of soya beans, garlic, chilis, and
other spices. Again, it's great for use as a barbecue sauce on chicken
and beef, but it's probably best known as Peking sauce, because it is
the sauce commonly served with Peking duck. In addition to this, it
is
also very popular as a dipping sauce.

Soy Sauce

Perhaps the most important sauce used for Chinese cooking is soy
sauce. Soy sauce is a brown colored liquid that is made by brewing
fermented soya beans with salt. This sauce has an unmistakable
salty flavor, and is used in a wide variety of Chinese dishes.
Soy sauce is available in either light, which is usually used more for
a dipping sauce, or the dark type, which is more common for cooking
purposes. There are few dishes in Chinese cooking that do not
incorporate soy sauce in some way, but even the ones that don't
are often dipped in it.

Chinese cooking is becoming more popular in our part of world all
the time. These dishes have a unique style and taste that is largely
due to the different sauces that are used. In America, many of
these sauces are used more for dipping than actual cooking. We've
taken Chinese cooking and put our own spin on it. There are
many brands of these Chinese sauces available at you local market,
but if you're interested in experiencing true Chinese cooking, try to
get sauces that are imported from China.

Borderline Diabetes

What You Need To Know About Borderline Diabetes

Oh, we've come so far in diabetes research and treatments over the
years. Just about ten or twenty years ago, you could be diagnosed
as being "borderline diabetes" or "pre-diabetes". This gave a false
level of reassurance. Treatment for diabetes usually wasn't started,
as it wasn't thought of as being necessary, since you were still in a
grace period. Then, the patient usually
got worse.

Surprise, Surprise

Why did the patient get worse? Because there is no such condition
as "borderline diabetes". It's like being pregnant – there is no such
thing as being only a little bit pregnant. You are either pregnant or
you are not. It's the same with diabetes. You either have it or you
don't. There are no known symptoms or signs that point to you
having "borderline diabetes".

Unfortunately, decades ago, it was thought that the body put of
signs and symptoms that cried out that it was developing diabetes.
This is what "borderline diabetes" was called. However, that hope
has died. The body does not give off any warning signs before you
have to start managing your insulin and diet. You just fall head over
heels right into being a diabetic.

However, you can show worse symptoms with your diabetes than
the next diabetic. Blood sugar levels differ and symptoms differ.
This is kind of like where the myth of "borderline diabetes" got
started. The ones who weren't too affected in their everyday life
and didn't go easily into comas must be only have
"borderline diabetes". No, it was because they managed their health
better.

It also parallels the myth of being only a little bit pregnant. In the
first trimester, you don’t look pregnant, you usually don't start
morning sickness and you feel normal, even though you are pregnant.
But by the eighth month you wish you could explode and get it over
with already. By the ninth month, you are ready to bite off heads
with your bare teeth. That was probably what our ancestors
thought of as being "a lot pregnant".

Don't Believe The Hype

This writer heard the term "borderline diabetes" being used by
medical professionals in the early 1990's, so this is one medical
myth that defiantly refuses to die. If a senior relative or friend
insists that they have only "borderline diabetes", don't argue.
This is probably what they were told years ago and it's stuck in
their heads. In time, the terms "borderline diabetes" and "pre-
diabetes" can be put to rest.

The Secrets Of Campfire Cooking

The key to campfire cooking is to keep it simple and make it good. Campfire cooking is usually done on camping of backpacking trips, where hungry hikers need plenty of calories to keep their energy up. Campfire cooking is no time for low-fat, low-calorie cuisine.

There are several methods of cooking campfire food. With a little practice, you can master them all.

Roasting Food Over The Fire

This is by far the easiest campfire cooking method, often used for hot dogs, marshmallows, or almost any other food that can be stuck on a skewer and held above an open flame. A recent fad for campfire cooking is to use long-handled iron molds, known as “pie irons” to heat sandwiches over hot coals.

Grilling Food

Grilling is another favorite method of campfire cooking. Use a hand-held grill to warm food, make toast, or grill burgers, meat, or vegetables. If you’re not comfortable grilling over a campfire, bring a small hibachi or kettle-style grill with you on you camping trip, and grill your food there.

Frying Food

Frying is probably the most difficult method of campfire cooking, but it can be done. The main problem with frying food on a camping trip is packing the frying pan. Frying pans are heavy, and their handles make them awkward to pack and carry. An alternative is to use a pan without a handle,
and move the pan in and out of the fire with a clamping device.

Boiling Food

If you’re backpacking, you will no doubt find yourself boiling food. Most fresh foods are too heavy to carry in backpacks because of their moisture content, so hikers pack dried foods that must be reconstituted in boiling water.

A dutch oven is the favored pot for campfire cooking, because the oven can be placed directly on hot coals. However, dutch ovens tend to be too heavy to carry when backpacking. Backpackers should pack lightweight, folded sheets of aluminum foil that they can use to steam vegetables or cook meat like freshly caught fish. Just wrap the food well in the foil, place the foil on the coals, and wait.

Trial and error is the best way to perfect your methods of campfire cooking, because every fire is different, and every camp site is different. Before lighting a fire for cooking, make sure open fires are permitted in the area where you are camping.

Campers should also be aware that campfire cooking can attract unwanted guests, like bear and other hungry wildlife. Never risk your life to save your dinner.
